What Does a Heater Water Pressure Switch Do?
The water pressure switch is part of the pool heater's safety control system. Its purpose is to confirm the presence of sufficient water pressure before allowing the heater's burner circuit to operate.
If water pressure is insufficient, the switch prevents or interrupts heater operation to help protect the equipment. However, water pressure does not directly measure actual water flow, so proper pump operation and circulation must also be verified.
Signs of a Possible Pressure Switch Problem
- Heater displays a water-pressure or flow-related fault.
- Heater fails to initiate the heating sequence.
- Heater safety circuit remains open despite verified adequate circulation.
- Pressure switch shows physical damage or corrosion.
- Qualified diagnostic testing confirms incorrect switch operation.
Troubleshooting: A pressure-switch fault does not always mean the switch is defective. Restricted filters, closed valves, inadequate pump flow, blocked plumbing, or damaged wiring may produce similar symptoms. Always identify and correct the underlying problem before replacing components.
