    Pentair Sand Pool Filters

Aqua Pool Supply carries Pentair sand pool filters, including the Triton II, Tagelus, and Sand Dollar series. Sand filters clean your water by circulating it through a bed of filter sand that traps dirt and debris, making them the simplest and most economical filter type to own. Below you'll find complete sand filter systems along with the multiport valves and parts to keep them running.

    Pentair Sand Filter Models

Pentair offers three main sand filter families, each suited to a different pool size and budget:

    Triton II

The industry-standard high-capacity sand filter, built on a durable fiberglass-reinforced tank and available in side-mount or top-mount configurations. It features ClearPro Technology for improved water quality, a swing-away diffuser for instant access to the sand bed, and a combination sand-and-water drain that makes servicing and winterizing easy. A strong fit for larger in-ground and high-demand pools.

    Tagelus

A versatile, value-focused residential sand filter offered in a wide range of tank sizes with top-mount or side-mount options. The Tagelus pairs dependable filtration with the same easy-service drain design, making it a popular choice for a broad range of pool sizes.

    Sand Dollar

A compact, one-piece molded tank with a clamp-style, six-position top-mount multiport valve included. Its special lateral design promotes even flow and long filter cycles, making it well suited to smaller in-ground and above-ground pools.

Many sand filters use a separate backwash or multiport valve to control water flow. Browse our multiport valves and replacement parts if you need to add or replace one.

    Why Choose a Sand Filter?

Sand filters remain a favorite for owners who want filtration that's easy to live with:

    • The simplest maintenance. A quick backwash is usually all it takes, and the sand itself lasts for years.
    • The most economical. Sand filters typically cost less upfront and the media is inexpensive to replace.
    • Durable and long-lasting. Fiberglass-reinforced and molded tanks stand up to pool chemicals and the Arizona sun.
    • Worth knowing. Sand filters trap larger particles than cartridge or D.E. systems, so they're the most hands-off option but not the finest at polishing water.

Deciding between filter types? Our guide to pool filter types and top Pentair models compares sand, cartridge, and D.E. systems side by side.

    Sizing Your Filter

Match the filter's tank size and flow rate to your pump and pool volume. A larger tank holds more sand, handles a faster turnover, and runs longer between backwashes. Pentair offers everything from compact Sand Dollar tanks for smaller pools up to high-capacity Triton II models for large in-ground systems. If you're unsure which size fits your setup, reach out and we'll help you match the right model.

    Maintenance & Replacement

Watch the pressure gauge: when system pressure rises roughly 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting point, set the valve to backwash to flush debris out of the sand bed, then rinse and return to the filter setting. The filter sand itself generally lasts five to seven years before it needs replacing. You'll find laterals, multiport valves, and replacement parts to keep your system performing season after season.

    Explore More Pool Filters

Pentair sand filters are one part of our full pool filter selection. If you want finer filtration or lower water use, you can also browse Pentair cartridge filters for no-backwash operation, or Pentair D.E. filters for the clearest water possible.

    Pentair Sand Filter FAQs

How does a sand filter compare to cartridge and D.E. filters?

Sand filters are the simplest and most economical type, cleaned with a quick backwash and inexpensive media that lasts for years. They trap larger particles than cartridge or D.E. filters, so they're the most hands-off choice but not the best at polishing water to a crystal finish. Cartridge filters filter finer and skip backwashing, while D.E. filters offer the finest clarity of all.

Do Pentair sand filters need backwashing?

Yes. When pressure climbs about 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting point, you set the valve to backwash to flush trapped debris out of the sand bed, then rinse and return to the filter setting. Because backwashing uses water, check your local guidelines on where the discharge can go.

How often should I replace the sand?

Filter sand generally lasts five to seven years, depending on how heavily the pool is used. Over time the sharp edges of the sand grains wear smooth and filter less effectively, so replacing the media restores filtration performance. Check your filter's manual for the exact sand quantity your model requires.

Should I choose the Triton II, Tagelus, or Sand Dollar?

The Triton II is the high-capacity choice for larger in-ground and high-demand pools. The Tagelus is a versatile, value-focused option offered in a wide range of sizes. The Sand Dollar is a compact, budget-friendly filter that comes with a multiport valve included, ideal for smaller in-ground and above-ground pools. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help you decide.

Does my sand filter come with a valve?

It depends on the model. The Sand Dollar typically includes a six-position multiport valve, while Triton II and Tagelus filters are often sold without a valve so you can choose a top-mount or side-mount configuration. Check the product details for each filter, and browse our multiport and backwash valves if you need to add one.
