How the Pentair Water Pressure Switch Works
The water pressure switch is part of the heater's safety control system. It responds to pressure within the water circulation circuit, helping the heater determine whether the required water flow conditions are present.
When sufficient water pressure is detected, the switch allows the heater control system to recognize the pressure condition. If water pressure falls below the required level, the switch changes state, allowing the control system to interrupt heating operation.
The pressure switch does not directly measure water flow. Proper adjustment, plumbing configuration, and circulation are necessary for safe operation.
Common Signs of a Faulty Water Pressure Switch
- Heater fails to start despite adequate water circulation.
- Water pressure or flow-related fault messages.
- Heater operation becomes intermittent.
- Corroded or damaged switch terminals.
- Water leakage around the pressure switch connection.
- Pressure switch failing electrical continuity testing under the specified conditions.

- Allow the heating equipment to cool and completely relieve water pressure.

- Disconnect the original switch wiring after documenting the existing connections.
- Remove the defective switch according to Pentair's service instructions.
- Install the genuine Pentair 473605Z replacement using the manufacturer's specified sealing and tightening procedures.
- Reconnect the electrical terminals according to the heater wiring diagram.
- Restore water circulation and inspect for leaks.
- Verify the switch operates correctly under the manufacturer's required flow and pressure conditions before returning the heater to service.
