How to Set Your Pentair Variable-Speed Pump for Continuous Operation

How to Set Your Pentair Variable-Speed Pump for Continuous Operation

Running your Pentair pump nearly 24/7 ensures smooth circulation, balanced chemistry, and clear water — and it’s energy-efficient when set on a low speed. Below is a straightforward guide for setting your Pentair pump to operate continuously, based on official manuals and proven practices.

Step 1: Check That Your Pump Supports Scheduling

This method applies to Pentair variable-speed pumps with digital controls and scheduling capability, such as:

Refer to your owner’s manual to confirm that Schedule Mode is available.

Step 2: Turn On the Pump and Open the Menu

  1. Ensure the pump has power — a green light or illuminated screen indicates it’s on.
  2. Press the Menu button to access settings.
  3. Navigate to Schedule or Speed 1–8 Schedule and select it.

Step 3: Select a Speed Slot

It’s recommended to use one of the higher-numbered speed slots (such as Speed 5–8) for a continuous low-speed schedule, leaving lower slots free for tasks like vacuuming or boosting.

Step 4: Program the Schedule for Continuous Operation

  1. Set the status of your chosen speed slot to Schedule (rather than Disabled).
  2. Set the Start Time to 12:00 AM and the Stop Time to 11:59 PM. This one-minute gap allows the system to reset while effectively running all day.
  3. Press Save to record the schedule.

Step 5: Adjust the RPM to Your Desired Flow Rate

With the schedule active, adjust the RPM using the up and down arrows to achieve the desired water movement while keeping energy use low. Save your settings before exiting.

Step 6: Activate the Schedule

Press Start/Stop to switch the pump into Schedule Mode. The display should indicate that the schedule is running.

Optional: Add Higher-Speed Periods

If you’d like the pump to occasionally run at a higher speed for tasks like cleaning or heating, program an additional speed slot with specific times that don’t overlap your continuous schedule.

Why Use a 23:59 Schedule?

Setting the run time for 23 hours and 59 minutes avoids firmware errors and gives the motor a brief reset, which prolongs equipment life while maintaining full-day circulation.

Benefits of Running Continuously

Benefit Explanation
Improved circulation Water moves uniformly, helping chemicals disperse evenly.
Algae prevention Dead spots are eliminated, reducing the chance of growth.
Energy efficiency Low-speed operation uses far less power than cycling on and off at high speed.
Cleaner equipment Filters and pipes stay clearer with constant water flow.

Final Notes

Once programmed, your pump should display “Running Schedule” on the screen. Regularly check the filter pressure and clean or backwash when needed to maintain optimal performance. If your pump is connected to a Pentair automation system like IntelliTouch or EasyTouch, you may need to set the continuous schedule through that system instead.
