How ACTIVATE Glass Filter Media Works

Dr. Dryden's ACTIVATE is manufactured from recycled glass that undergoes a specialized activation process. This treatment modifies the glass surface to enhance its filtration characteristics.

Compared with conventional silica sand, the activated media is designed to provide increased surface area and improved contaminant capture. Its surface properties also help resist the accumulation of biological material that can contribute to filter fouling.

As pool water passes through the filtration bed, suspended particles are trapped within the media while filtered water returns to the swimming pool.

Benefits of ACTIVATE Glass Media

  • Helps improve swimming pool water clarity.
  • Provides fine-particle filtration beyond conventional sand under suitable conditions.
  • Helps reduce organic contamination inside the filter.
  • Resists biological fouling of the filtration media.
  • Supports efficient filter backwashing.
  • May reduce backwash water consumption compared with traditional sand.
  • Provides durable filtration media for long-term use.
  • Uses recycled glass rather than mined silica sand.

Grade 1 Fine vs. Grade 2 Coarse

Dr. Dryden's ACTIVATE is available in different grades for specific filtration applications.

  • Grade 1 Fine: Used as the primary filtration layer to capture fine suspended particles and improve water clarity.
  • Grade 2 Coarse: Used as a supporting filtration layer in installations requiring a graded media bed.

Important: Some sand filters require both Fine and Coarse ACTIVATE media. The correct quantities depend on the filter model, original sand capacity, internal dimensions, and manufacturer's recommended installation procedure.

Replacing Sand with ACTIVATE Glass Filter Media

ACTIVATE is designed to replace traditional swimming pool filter sand. However, the required quantity of glass media may differ from the original sand weight.

When converting an existing sand filter, follow the ACTIVATE media conversion chart and the filter manufacturer's instructions. Do not assume that 25 lb of ACTIVATE replaces 25 lb of silica sand on a one-to-one basis.

The proper media quantity and grade distribution are important for maintaining water circulation, backwashing performance, and filtration efficiency.

Compatible Swimming Pool Filters

ACTIVATE Grade 1 Fine media may be used in compatible sand filtration systems, including selected models from:

  • Pentair Triton II Sand Filters
  • Pentair Tagelus Sand Filters
  • Pentair Sand Dollar Sand Filters
  • Hayward Pro Series Sand Filters
  • Hayward S200 Series Sand Filters
  • Waterway Sand Filtration Systems
  • Other Manufacturer-Approved Swimming Pool Sand Filters

Compatibility Notice: Confirm that the filter manufacturer permits glass media and verify the required media grade, quantity, and minimum particle size before installation.

Installation Instructions

  1. Turn off the swimming pool pump and disconnect electrical power.
  2. Completely relieve pressure from the filter tank.
  3. Remove the existing filter media according to the filter manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Inspect the filter laterals, standpipe, collector assembly, and internal components for damage.
  5. Verify the correct quantity of ACTIVATE Grade 1 Fine and any required Grade 2 Coarse media.
  6. Protect the standpipe opening to prevent media from entering the plumbing.
  7. Add water to the filter tank as recommended by the filter manufacturer to help protect the internal components during filling.
  8. Install the ACTIVATE media according to the recommended grade distribution and fill quantity.
  9. Reassemble the filter and verify that all seals and connections are properly installed.
  10. Backwash the filter three times according to ACTIVATE's startup recommendations.
  11. Complete the required rinse cycle before returning the filtration system to normal operation.
  12. Record the clean operating filter pressure for future maintenance reference.

ACTIVATE Filter Media Maintenance

ACTIVATE is designed for long-term service in properly maintained filtration systems. Routine backwashing removes accumulated debris and contaminants from the media bed.

Follow the filter manufacturer's recommendations for backwash frequency, water flow, pressure limits, and maintenance procedures.

Regularly test pool water chemistry and maintain adequate sanitizer levels. ACTIVATE enhances physical filtration but does not replace chlorine or another approved pool sanitizer.
