U.S. Seal PS-100 Pool & Spa Pump Mechanical Shaft Seal (5/8" Shaft)
The U.S. Seal PS-100 is a general-service mechanical shaft seal used on many pool and spa pumps with a 5/8" (0.625") motor shaft. It installs between the motor shaft and the pump wet end to prevent water from leaking along the shaft into the motor. This is a common, industry-standard seal style used in residential chlorine pool applications.
Key Specifications
- Manufacturer: U.S. Seal
- Part Number: PS-100
- Shaft Size: 5/8" (0.625")
- Seal Type/Format: Type A style mechanical seal (commonly cross-referenced to John Crane Type 6 format)
- Typical Service: General residential pool/spa use (standard chlorine water)
- Typical Materials (General Service): Buna elastomers, ceramic seat, stainless hardware, molded/plastic primary components
Common Applications
- Pool and spa pump wet ends that use a 5/8" shaft seal in a Type A / Type 6 format
- Commonly referenced with pump families from Pentair/Sta-Rite, Purex, Hydrotech, and other legacy pump lines (verify by pump model or old seal match)
What This Seal Does
- Creates a watertight barrier at the motor shaft while allowing the shaft to rotate freely.
- Helps protect motor bearings, windings, and electrical components from water damage.
- Supports reliable priming and prevents small leaks that can introduce air or reduce performance.
When to Replace
- Water dripping from beneath the motor area or from the wet-end seam (common shaft seal leak symptom)
- Grinding/squealing noise after a leak (bearing damage risk from prior water exposure)
- Any time the motor is replaced or the impeller is removed for service
- Seal faces show cracking, chipping, heavy scale, or visible wear
Installation Notes
- Disconnect power at the breaker and relieve system pressure before opening the pump.
- Keep the polished seal faces clean and dry during installation; avoid touching the faces with oily/dirty hands.
- Do not apply lubricant to the polished seal faces. Lubricate only rubber O-rings/grommets as needed with pool-safe silicone lubricant.
- Clean the seal plate and mating surfaces thoroughly to prevent misalignment and repeat leaks.
- Inspect the impeller for cracks or melted plastic; a damaged impeller can quickly ruin a new seal.
Maintenance Tip
Small drips often get worse quickly. If you notice moisture under the pump, address it early to avoid motor damage. Also keep water chemistry balanced and avoid running the pump dry, which can overheat and destroy the seal faces.
